American Chufa Planting & Care Instructions

Chufas grow best in sandy-loam soil type. Chufas should be planted at the rate of 30-40 lbs to the acre. Disk the soil well and spread chufas by hand or spreader then disk seed in lightly (1 to 1 1/2 inch deep) to cover. Planting dates will vary depending upon location April to August. Maturity takes 100 days on average after emergence.

Chufas love fertilizer and nitrogen. Fertilizer may be applied at the time of planting or shortly after. We recommend 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 at 600 lb to the acre. Split applications of nitrogen can be of benefit on sandy soil.

Rotating chufa plot sites from year to year can cut down on insect and weed problems.
